An Extra Day!

My layout predominately features the new line Handmade, which should be in stores any day now! I created a diagonally-striped background by layering Pink Lemonade and Linen paper strips on a piece of cardstock, and trimming off the excess ends:

I added lots of layers in the form of patterned papers, punches, Instagram photos, and die cuts from the Bag of Bits. I also tucked an Index Journal Card in there for good measure!

 

My title is combination of ABC cardstock stickers + cardstock cut from my Silhouette. I adhered it with foam squares to add a bit of depth:

Guest Designer's Space: Lisa VanderVeen

Hey there! Yesterday, our guest designer Lisa VanderVeen shared a couple of layouts with us. Today, we get to take a peek into where she creates! We peppered her with a few questions...

Do you have a dedicated scrap space?

Yes. I recently acquired my husband’s home office, which is a loft over our bedroom. I love it because it’s my own dedicated area (previously, I shared a room with our guest bed and elliptical trainer) and it feels like my own private scrapbooking treehouse. I love that I can make a mess and no one can tell me to pick it up.

When do you scrap?

During the day while my daughter is at school. I try to scrap in the evenings but, unfortunately, I turn into a pumpkin at around 8:30 p.m. and am thereafter creatively useless.

How do you start your layout? Photos? Story? Product?

I generally start a layout with photos. I take way too many of them (who among us doesn’t?) and have trouble cutting them down so 80% of my layouts are 2 page layouts. Once I’ve chosen the photos, I consider the design I want to use and then choose product. My stories are generally closely tied to the photos, because I am more of a photojournalistic type photographer. 

Are you a fast or slow scrapper?

I’m fairly fast. I try not to get bogged down in getting it perfect and I try to embrace happy accidents.

How do you organize your stash?

Paper (including scraps) and alphas by color, embellishments by style/material. I have a ton of clear plastic bead boxes and I store all of my buttons, brads, etc. in there by manufacturer. Tall sheets of alphas (12x12 sheets) and chipboard stickers, etc. go into large standing baskets that slip into my shelves. My scrapspace isn’t as fancy as some others, but I love it. Over the years, I’ve learned what organization works for me.

Do you listen to music while scrapping? Eat?

I LOVE ‘70s music. I am also a total news junkie. So, since I don’t have a TV in my scrapspace but I do have a computer, I either listen to ‘70s music on Pandora or I listen to CNN on my computer. I rarely eat while scrapping, but a cup of coffee is never far away.

Do you have a go to technique?

I am ADDICTED to punches. It’s a problem. I rarely complete a layout without a punch.

Dream travel destination: Egypt

Favorite food: Cheeseburgers and fries.  If they weren’t bad for me, I would eat them every day.  And tostadas from Poquito Mas. Well, and sushi. And Greek yogurt. Oh. You said “food”, not “foods”. Sorry ;).

Superhero power: That I want? Or that I have? I guess I have eyes in the back of my head where my daughter is concerned. But I would rather be invisible… Or be able to fly. Flying would be cool.

Favorite color combo: Right now, muted colors (yellows, blues, oranges) and ALWAYS neutral backgrounds (kraft, cream, white, black).

Perfect weekend: Staying home. We travel a lot and I really love just spending weekends at home, catching up on reading and scrapping and working out and hanging out with my cats.

Happy Monday! Our guest designer, this month, is Lisa VanderVeen. Her style is classic, but always with a fun twist. She uses products in such creative ways. Lisa adds her handwriting to all her layouts. I love how she's documenting not only a story, but adding a very personal touch too. And oh, she takes beautiful photos!

A Little Bit of Handmade

Hi Everyone!  Piradee with you today to share this layout I created using the pattern papers from the super sweet Handmade collection. I just love the mix of colors (especially that shade of pink) and the fun designs in this collection. 

The patchwork pattern paper is definitely my favorite item from the collection and was my inspiration for this layout. I first started by creating the background using the patchwork pattern paper to create my own patchwork in a sense (with a lot more white space). And then layered bits and pieces of the other pattern papers, selecting mostly those with single color to help highlight my picture. 

I also put my silhouette machine to good use and using one of their designs, I cut out the hearted background for some added fun with the positive/negative effect.

And serious, don't you just adore that pattern papers and also the sweet mix of colors in this collection!!

A card based on this months sketch...

Hey there, this is Lisa Day!

I love using a good sketch to put together a quick card. Sometimes I struggle with making cards because I get stuck on the design. But, when I start with a sketch it takes away the thinking part of the card and I can just play!

I used the awesome new Handmade line to make this card so my kids can send their Great Grandma a card in Florida and tell her to hurry home!

A tip to helping a card not feel too flat without adding a lot of bulky dimension is to doodle. I doodled on all of the elements and even doodled the 'we miss you' sentiment. I love the whimsical feel it adds to the card. It felt really flat before I did this and now it pops!

I'm loving the Bag of Bits that are in the new collections!! Aren't they just yummy!

I used the beautiful sketch by Katja to create my card. Don't forget to use the sketch and enter to win some yummy Lily Bee products.

Getting the most out of the Tiny Tablet!

There is no doubt about it that prescribing yourself one of these tablets is good for you ... the Lily Bee Tiny Tablet that is!

I love the tiny tablets that Lily Bee produces for each of its ranges.  It means that you can cut smaller pieces of paper to use on your layouts, but still have the benefit of being able to see lots of the lovely patterns.

I have used the papers in the tiny tablet from the Memorandum range on this layout about my family ...

I simply cut 1.5 inch squares from a selection of the papers and then laid them together under the photo to create this grid.  I then added a row of the banner stickers below the grid.

 

I used the Stationery range for the background and for the three circles that I included.  I splashed the background with a white mist for another layer of detail.  Once again, I placed the title around one of the circles ... this is definitely becoming a habit for me!  I also included that gorgeous family quote from the rubons in one of Lily Bee's older ranges.

The hearts were punched from another of the tiny tablets papers and I attached them to the layout with foam tape for dimension.  I then wrapped them with a little twine so it is like they are in a little nest.

I love the memorandum range!  Definitely a go to range for me.  I challenge you to grab a tiny tablet and create a layout today.

If you are like me, sometimes at the end of a project or two you are met with heaps of scraps that hardly seem worth saving.  At the same time these papers are just to pretty to recycle, especially if they are Lily Bee papers.  My solution? Turn those scraps into cards.

Start with some strips of scraps patterned paper.  What i love about Lily Bee is that their lines always go together.  Here my leftovers consist of all 4 new releases.  I cut my strips into roughly 1/2" to 3/4" pieces.

Add your strips to the base of your card.  I like my strips kind of wonky so they will not always be even.  Some will go right to the edges too.  I trim as i go with scissors.

The card looks pretty good just as is.  In fact, when you have lots of strips, i would create a bunch of cards just like this and decide how you want to finish it off later.  You could add layers of sentiments, some embellishments, etc.  So many possibilities.

To finish my card i decided to use one of those punches that can go anywhere on the page.  I knew i wanted three hearts for my sentiment so i started on the left side.

To punch the next heart, i used the first opening to guide my next punch with was a bit lower and more centered on the card.  Repeat this step for the last heart.

I added a black stitch and then doodle in my hearts so they would pop more off the page.  Another option is to ink the interior rims of the hearts.

I finished the card by adding in my sentiment using those awesome abc stickers.  They are the perfect size.  I also tied a piece of baker's twine with a tiny key bring my design elements together.

As you can see my Layout doesn't exactly match the sketch. I have used patterned papers instead of the three photos and chose to use just one photo placed next to the paper swatches. The sketch is for you to use as inspiration only, turn it around, mix it up, be inspired by it.

Love Notes: a mini album

Happy Valentine's Day!

Around the world, it's the day to celebrate love and your loved one. Today I'm celebrating with my hubby and family and this cute little Love Notes Mini Album. I'm so thankful that after twenty-two years of marriage, we've still head over heels.
My little mini-album holds quotes, photos and has little pockets to hold bits and pieces of memorabilia. I'm a sentimental girl and hold onto all those little cards that come with floral arrangements and ticket stubs. The pockets are perfect for that.


To create this 4"x4" mini album, I've used a couple small squares of chipboard and patterned paper from the new Victoria Park paper line.



Index cards and the wonderful Lily Bee ABC stickers make the journaling and embellishing quick and easy.
