Friday Faves

>> Friday, May 28, 2010

Happy Friday Faves day! We are excited to share some amazing projects with you this week found in our Ning Gallery. There is so much talent and creativity out there. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Michelle Unruh shared this wonderful layout of her daughter on her 21st birthday. I love the black and white photo with the pop of blue on the neutral background. The title is wonderful, as well! This one really stands out and is quite lovely.

Takako shared this extremely "Cute" layout about her daughter. I love how she layered all the various elements and added some random stitching to the mix. I love the rub-ons! Those adorable photos really stand out.

Amy Coose shared this gorgeous layout "love notes". I love everything about the layout design, but my favorite part is the subject. What a wonderful thing to remember; those precious love notes tucked inside a lunch box! This is such a sweet layout all the way around!

We hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

"Lovely" Shapes

>> Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Hi everyone! Iris here. I really love the colors and patterns of the "Lovely" collection and I have been thinking of ways to be able to use my scraps. I thought it would be fun to cover my chipboard shapes with these papers. Another great way to use your scraps would be to create patterns and embellishments with it using your die-cuts.

Here is one layout I made of my youngest daughter Cheska about her love for her Tigger.

These die-cut shapes were made using Sizix dies.

Hope you all have a lovely scrappy day!!

hello everyone, katrina here. summer is quickly approaching. in fact, my kids are in their last week of school.  i was stumped when trying to think of a title for this layout.  but then, i was looking at the lily bee hello sunshine rub ons and it hit me...enjoy.  yes, having them all home in the summer will be tough at times especially when it's 110+ degrees outside and we are all cooped in the house.  but when all is said and done, i truly enjoy these little people.

a special thanks to helmar for supplying the team with their fabulous adhesive.   i use the acid free glue on the alphas and the ribbon. thanks for looking.

Inspiration in Unexpected Places

>> Monday, May 24, 2010

Good Morning and Happy Monday!

Today I want to share a layout I made featuring the beautiful Lily Bee Lovely Collection.

When I saw the Lovely Collection for the first time, I immediately thought of this photo from our recent Caribbean cruise. I knew the Lovely Collection would perfectly compliment the deep ocean colors in the photo.

Interestingly enough, the idea for the design came from a wall display at my favorite store, Anthropologie. If you are anything like me, there are times when a little creative boost and some extra inspiration is needed. When I am in need of some inspiration, I love visiting my favorite scrapbook galleries (like the Lily Bee Ning site:), and I have also found that some of my favorite stores like Anthropologie, Crate and Barrel, and Pottery Barn, have great designs in their catalogues and wall displays. It is so much fun to find design inspiration in unexpected places!

In order to create this "mosaic look", I used a 1 inch square punch, and began punching many different squares from the patterned paper in the Lovely Collection. I then positioned the squares as a diamond mosaic, and trimmed the edge pieces in half to create a large square. I incorporated some kraft squares as my journaling spot. I used Helmar's Quick Fix Adhesive Runner to adhere all the squares in place. The Lovely chipboard, die cut, and the beautiful brown tulle flower from the French Couture collection completed the look.

Make sure you head over to the Lily Bee Ning site for some amazing inspiration. And next time you are out and about, remember to look around for some unexpected inspiration!

Fabulous May Flaum Tutorial

>> Friday, May 21, 2010

What could be better than warming weather and happy memories? For me, that’s easy. Making time to scrapbook. My name is May Flaum, and I’ve been playing a whole lot as I get ready for my next on-line class at Big Picture to start in June. Lily Bee will be featured during my class, and I’m happy to be popping over here today to share a new layout of mine with you.

What I love about Lily Bee the most is that I can get a vintage feel, but still use my current photos and have bright colors and lots of fun. Today I’ve created a layout with two (4 x 6) photos to share with you.

Supplies: Lily Bee “hello sunshine” rub-ons, chipboard, die-cuts, and patterned paper; other: cardstock, two small doilies, pen, four buttons, thread

After I laid out the papers (6 ½ x 12 torn white cardstock, 5 x 12 torn patterned paper) and photos I set to work on my pleated faux-ribbon effect. I used two strips of ¾” x 12” patterned paper and just folded (as shown above). Pleating takes a little getting used to, but it gets to be really fast and easy – and such a fun effect for your patterned paper!

To adhere the strips just use dry adhesive or tape runner (be generous!) and press the areas you want to be against the paper down. If desired you can make it flatter by stitching into place or simply pressing each bit down. Totally a personal choice!

Another fun thing I did on this layout is to layer a rub-on with a doily. This time, my small doily was just a little too big so I cut out the center and wrinkled it to shrink it up. Then I used plenty of adhesive to stick it down to the layout before mounting the rub-on (which was rubbed onto white cardstock and backed with a generous helping of foam adhesive) on top.

I repeated a similar technique with paper ribbon underneath one of the (awesome!) Lily Bee chipboard flowers. I topped it with a button and continued on!

For the rest I added in more of my chipboard buttons (oh how I adore them!), some strips for journaling (about 5/8” high, edged with pink ink), and I cut the corner off one of the die-cut frames for my tab (top left).

I had so much fun with this spring page, I’m inspired to get more photos out and play some more!

Using Negative Space

>> Thursday, May 20, 2010

I'm a sucker for saving packaging to use on future layouts or projects. I love the idea of creating something a little different that wasn't really meant to be used in a crafty way. Today I'd like to share with you a simple layout, Conversation with Nana, using the negative space from the leftover flower chipboard package.

I created my layout using the beautiful Lovely & Three Little Birds collections. I trimmed the pretty papers & b&w photos to size and attached them to the sticky back of the chipboard. Once my background was created using the Quick-Fix Permanent Adhesive Runner by Helmar's, which is absolutely the best, I then adhered your chipboard to my background. For this, I used the Acid Free Glue. I decided to leave the black buttons as they were, but you could always replace them with mini photos or brads or even jewels.

There are so many other fun & creative ways to using your flower chipboard, to name a few, wall art, cover of a mini album, photo frame, or even a banner. The possibilities are endless.

Western Banner

>> Wednesday, May 19, 2010

It's easy to think of polka dots, florals, and damask patterns as "girly," but the colors in the Hello Sunshine line make it easy to add a boyish touch to it.

My son's 4th birthday party was last week, and he's a HUGE Toy Story fan. He in particular loves the character "Woody," so we focused on the cowboy side of things.

I created this "Yeehaw!" banner as a decoration for the party, using a Maya Road chipboard banner, the Lily Bee "Hello Sunshine" line, and my Silhouette machine.
I used a ton of Helmar Zapdots to pop up the stars and give the banner some dimension.
I thought the little chipboard buttons in the middle of the letters added a cool touch. Torn muslin strips made it look more "rugged."
This cowboy (cut on my Silhouette machine) was inked and then spritzed with Copper Glimmer Mist.

Happiness...

>> Tuesday, May 18, 2010

I've decided that 2010 is the year I'm going to focus on what makes me happy. I love finding the little things in my life that bring me happiness. Lily Bee makes me happy. And making a layout with Lovely Lily Bee products, about the things that make me happy, was a naturally perfect fit.

(I apologize that I failed to take step-by-step pictures, so I hope my explanation makes sense!) For this layout I created a grid for the placement of my embellishments and my pictures. I sketched out 2 1/2" squares with a ruler and a pencil (which I erased at the end!). Then I took a sheet of the Lovely Chipboard Stickers and removed the largest piece from the chipboard shapes and trimmed off the backing so I was left with one negative space on my sheet of chipboard. I flipped the sheet over and lined it up over my grid where I wanted the shape to be and made sure to cover the rest of my page with scrap papers so I didn't over spray. Then I misted into the negative shape (If you do this be sure you flip it over so you are spraying onto the back side of your chipboard and not ruining the beautiful pieces!) I used a heat gun (or you could use a blow dryer) in between misting each spot so I didn't smear the mist and because I'm too impatient to wait for each one to dry! Then I just punched out some random pictures of things that make me happy with my circle punch and placed them in the circles with random bits of the chipboard shapes. I love how easily the rub-ons go on...even on the shapes!

Here's a closer look at the pages.

I also made this layout just for fun (part of the happiness thing!). This day is one of those days my daughter will remember for a long time. I love these kinds of memories. The Hello Sunshine line was perfect for highlighting this fun moment in our lives. (I think I could use the chipboard shapes on every layout and never tire of them!!)

Fall into Spring

>> Monday, May 17, 2010

It's a funny thing how we tend to associate colors with seasons.

I say "fall," and you say...brown and orange.

I say "spring", and you say...brown and orange.

Okay, maybe you wouldn't necessarily say that, but after spending a little time with the new Lily Bee lines, you just might come to realize how these papers transcend our expectations of seasonal colors. I used a combination of orange and brown patterns from the Lovely line to showcase a few photos of my sweet kitty enjoying the springtime sunshine.

Color me surprised.

Signs of Spring

>> Sunday, May 16, 2010

Being a native Californian has definitely produced a whimpy weather chick in me. My husband lovingly jokes that I have a comfortable 2 degree range and, actually, he's closer than he thinks. The truth is that while California does not have four true seasons and the weather that goes along with them, it does have the tell-tell signs of each.

For me, the signs of Spring were all around from the blossoming trees and plants to the stores filled with Easter colors, candy and goods. The weather was still rainy, just like our mild Winter, but the color of the landscape changed and with it, my mood. I love seeing these signs. The two biggest signs for me are our Easter preparations and the Wisteria blooming in our yard. I plan to dedicate a layout to each of the season's signs for the next year. I think it will be a great way to look back and remember fondly my favorite signs of the seasons showing both nature and our family traditions.

Supply List:
Lily Bee - Lovely Patterned Papers
Lily Bee - Lovely Chipboard
Lily Bee - Lovely Rub-ons

On this layout, I pop-dotted the photos using Helmar's Zapdots. I love to pop dot my photos to give them dimension and add some interest. I, also, used an ultra fine sharpie to outline the photos to make them stand out a bit more on the page.

I like to outline chipboard, too. I used Helmar's 450 Quick Dry adhesive to adhere the ribbon and lace. It dries clear, so you don't see any glue lines. The Lovely Collection is so versatile with it's wide color range and that makes it one of my all time favorites.

Lovely Paper Lace

>> Saturday, May 15, 2010

Hello All!  This weekend i am going to show you how i created the Lovely lace paper on my two page layout.  But before we get to the tutorial, I wanted to point out a the chipboard detail to you.  I painted the Lovely Chipboard Stickers to match some of the colors on my page.  It's an easy way to add details to an already awesome product.

My Supplies include two strips of pattern paper 1.75 x 12 " long, a lace punch, and a sewing machine.  My punch is the Martha Stewart Doily Punch.  You could use any lace type border punch or scalloped edge border punch.

Adhere the two strips together & border punch one edge of the strip.

Fold the pattern paper back & forth on each other creating a ruffled look.  When you are folding the paper, it should be folded both ways, some folds to the left, some to the right.

It should look something like this when you are done folding.  If you don't own a sewing machine, you can glue down these folds.  It will be a bit tedious but i think worth it in the end.

If you don't want to glue the folds down, run the strip through a sewing machine.  It is an easy way to tack it down plus it gives you that "fabric" feel to the paper.  I like to do a couple different stitches on my paper.

The strip "shrinks" quite a bit which is why I used two 12" strips.  It looks so pretty & can be used on so many projects.  Here are a few close ups of my page:

I hope you will try out this technique & share your creations!

Friday Faves

>> Friday, May 14, 2010

Happy Friday! It's time for more Friday Faves and this week we have some amazing projects to share with you. Thank you for continuing to share your projects with us. We are overwhelmed by the talent out there and so grateful for the support.

I found this stunning layout by Becky Williams in our gallery. I love the mix of products and how she created "word" titles. I love the staple details and the fun pen stitching. It's just gorgeous!
Trish Turay shared this stunning "Tree Hugger" layout. I'm a huge fan of randomly placed embellishments and she's done a brilliant job of that on this layout. I love the mix of products she's used. I think this is excellent proof of how well Lily Bee pairs with other manufacturer products. It really is versatile.

Laura Achilles posted this adorable layout on the Helmar blog. The details are amazing and I adore the banner, so, so much. I am loving the banner trend, these days. This is a layout that just makes me happy!

Have a wonderful weekend!
